Have you ever cruised laps around Boyce Lake on a bluebird day? Admired the alpenglow on the Twilights from Bench Loop? Swore under your breath as you suffered up Beast Hill after a long day? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please consider helping Durango Nordic sustain and improve your experience by donating to our Snowcat Fundraiser.
Durango Nordic is committed to providing an outstanding experience to visitors, which includes excellent grooming. In the coming years, Durango Nordic will be partnering with the Katz Family, Purgatory, and Purgatory Metro District to improve our trails. This includes:
Regrading to improve access for beginner and intermediate skiers
Removing rocks and evening trail surfaces to improve our ability to groom them, thus extending the ski season
Growing our trail network with more terrain for all levels
In addition to all these improvements, a high quality grooming machine is essential to any ski operation. Durango Nordic currently uses a 1994 Bombardier Plus MP. It has over 9,000 grooming hours on it and is not ideal for our terrain. Its 18 foot berth is much too wide for our trails, which leads to inconsistent grooming and wobbly classic tracks.
It's time to upgrade.
A new snowcat can cost anywhere from $250,000-$500,000. We get it. That price tag is more daunting than climbing to the top of North Loop with bad kick wax. That's why Durango Nordic is looking to purchase a used snowcat in the $90,000 - $180,000 range. Our goal is to raise $50,000 towards a down payment on a snowcat during the 2018-2019 ski season.
The snowcat we are hoping to purchase is a 2015 Prinoth Demo Husky. This machine has only 800 hours on it and at just over 10 feet wide, is better equipped for our narrow trails. The machine also has more compression in the back and can adjust its grooming for different depths for different snow conditions. This will mean more consistent grooming across a variety of snow conditions.
Trails that are groomed appropriate to the terrain and conditions enable us to access beautiful pockets of wilderness that may otherwise have been unreachable. Consider supporting Durango Nordic, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with a donation that will go towards improving the quality of experience at the Nordic Center.
